Floral scent in bat-pollinated plants: a case of convergent evolution   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The chemical composition of floral scent in eight bat-pollinated species belonging to six different plant families was investigated. Floral scent was collected by headspace trapping using porous adsorbents and the chemical composition determined by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In all species except one the floral scent was found to include sulphur-containing compounds, of which several are reported for the first time in floral scents. Three species contained mushroom-like smelling fatty acid derivatives with a C8-skeleton. Such flowers may be recognized by pollinators as humid environments in otherwise dry surroundings. The presence of similar or chemically closely related sulphur containing compounds in floral scent of bat-pollinated plant species from differing families may represent a case of convergent evolution in scent composition and an adaptation to attract this specific group of pollinators with similar sensory preferences.  相似文献

1. To test the response of algal communities to altered grazer abundance in lakes lacking efficient predators on herbivores, we performed field and experimental studies in two sub-Antarctic lakes (South Georgia).
2. The number of algal species in these high latitude lakes is low, and all dominant species have grazer-resistant adaptations, including spines in three dimensions ( Staurastrum sp.), large size ( Tribonema sp.), a mucus sheet allowing viable passage through the gut ( Chlamydocapsa sp., Elakatothrix sp.) or ability to recruit individuals from the sediment surface ( Mallomonas sp.).
3. Algal community composition was only slightly changed by experimentally altered grazer abundance, indicating that it was already adapted for a high grazing pressure. Hence, the diets of herbivores were restricted to vulnerable food organisms such as Mallomonas sp. and heterotrophic flagellates in the water column, and to benthic food sources.
4. At high grazer abundance, the concentration of available phosphorus (PO4-P) in the water was lower than at low grazer abundances, due to inefficient nutrient regeneration by the copepod herbivores. Hence, in lakes where copepods are dominant grazers, algae suffer both directly from grazing and indirectly from reduced nutrient availability.  相似文献

Simple light use efficiency (ɛ) models of net primary production (NPP) have recently been given great attention (NPP = ɛ × absorbed photosynthetically active radiation). The underlying relationships have, however, not been much studied on a time step less than a month. In this study daily NPP was estimated as the sum of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and heterotrophic respiration (Rh) of a mixed pine and spruce forest in Sweden. NEE was measured by eddy correlation technique and Rh was estimated from measurements of forest floor respiration (Rf) and the root share of Rf. The total yearly NPP was on average 810 g C m−2 year−1 for 3 years and yearly ɛ was between 0.58 and 0.71 g C MJ−1, which is high in comparison with other studies. There was a seasonal trend in ɛ with a relatively constant level of approximately 0.90 g C MJ−1 from April to September Daily NPP did not increase for daily intercepted radiation above 6 MJ m−2 d−1, indicating that between-years variation in NPP is not directly dependent on total Qi. The light was most efficiently used at an average daytime temperature of around 15 °C. At daytime vapour pressure deficit above 1400 Pa ɛ was reduced by approximately 50%.  相似文献

The growth rate and water content of urea-fed seedlings of Pinus silvestris L. were compared with those of nitrate-and ammonium-fed seedlings grown in continuously renewed nutrient solutions, in which the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia and carbon dioxide was minimized. The growth rate of seedlings grown in an ammonium nutrient solution, in an urea nutrient solution and in a nitrate nutrient solution was about 90 per cent, 75 per cent and 60 per cent, respectively, of that of seedlings grown in a mixture of ammonium and nitrate. Seedlings with urea as the sole nitrogen source developed very severe chlorosis of the needles, the old roots were dark-coloured, the whole root system was very fragile, and the lateral roots of the third order were missing. Urea-grown seedlings had the highest nitrogen contents, closely followed by the ammonium and the ammonium + nitrate seedlings. The lowest nitrogen level was in nitrate seedlings. The low growth rate and the chlorosis of urea-fed seedlings were suggested to be the result of a hydrolysis of urea inside the root, causing an increase in pH and an accumulation of ammonia in the root.  相似文献

This study examines the importance of avian incubation costs as determinants of clutch-size variation by performing clutch-size and brood-size manipulations in the same population of Collared Flycatchers Ficedula albicollis during the same breeding season. In 2 5 cases when three or more clutches of the same size were completed on the same day, we moved two eggs on the day after the last egg had been laid from one randomly selected clutch (C) to another (C) and moved two other eggs from this to a third clutch (C+). In 20 other cases of simultaneously completed clutches of the same size, we moved two randomly selected young from one brood to a second and from that moved two other young to a third (B, B and B+groups). Most females were weighed the day after completion of the clutch and 1–4 days before hatching of the young, and some of them also 10–14 days after hatching of the young. We measured the daily energy expenditure of females incubating manipulated clutches of 4, 6 and 8 eggs by means of the doubly-labelled water (D218O) technique and also recorded their nest attendance. Hatching success of fertilized eggs was reduced in the enlarged clutches compared with control and reduced clutches. Females expired on average 3142.6 ml CO2 and expended 78.6 kJ per day while incubating, which corresponds to a metabolic intensity of 3.3 times BMR. Daily energy expenditure increased with clutch-size due to higher costs while incubating, and not because of changed activity patterns. There were no significant differences in length of incubation, female mass or mass changes between phases for the C, C and C+groups. In both the C and B groups, enlarged broods produced significantly more fledged young than control broods, and those significantly more than reduced broods. Fledgling tarsus-length and mass did not differ significantly between treatments in either the C or B groups. There was no significant difference in breeding success between clutch and brood manipulations. In this season, incubation costs did not entail significant fitness losses, expressed either as fledgling production or female condition. Also, control females could have raised more young to fledging age than they did with no apparent costs.  相似文献

Field experiments with nest boxes show that nest holes are a limiting factor on the local population size of the Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis. When this limiting resource occurs with different types that are quality related there is intraspecific competition among males for the best nest boxes, with bigger males being the better competitors. Population dynamics of Great Tit Parus major and Blue Tit P. caeruleus when compared with Collared Flycatchers suggests that there is strong interspecific Competition for available nest holes. Recent studies have found regularities in the pattern of distribution of dental parameters such as canine or carnassial length among sympatric carnivores. These regularities are taken to be indicative of community-wide character displacement. This study documents similar patterns in late Miocene and earliest Pliocene hyaenids from several localities in Eurasia and Africa. Statistical tests show ratios of lower carnassial total lengths and blade lengths between species to be suggestively equal among sympatric late Miocene hyaenas. Other measurements do not show this regular pattern. This finding mirrors that regarding modern canids in the Middle East, suggesting that a process leading to community-wide character displacement was in effect among these hyaenid taxa. Their response to this pattern suggests that they occupied a similar ecological role to modern canids. The causal basis for such a process is unknown but is suggested to lie in direct interspecific competition between carnivores rather than being a response to regularly spaced features of the environment. 1. Leaves that fall into the water represent a new habitat for microorganisms to colonise in streams, providing an opportunity to study colonisation and the subsequent regulation of community structure. We explored community composition of bacteria and fungi on decomposing alder leaves in nine streams in central Sweden, and describe their relationship with environmental variables. Succession of the microbial community was studied in one of the streams for 118 days. Microbial community composition was examined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis on replicate samples of leaves from each stream. 2. During succession in one stream, maximum taxon richness was reached after 34 days for bacteria and 20 days for fungi respectively. Replicate samples within this stream differed between each other earlier in colonisation, while subsequently such variation among replicate communities was low and remained stable for several weeks. Replicate samples taken from all the nine streams after 34 days of succession showed striking similarities in microbial communities within‐streams, although communities differed more strongly between streams. 3. Canonical analysis of microbial communities and environmental variables revealed that water chemistry had a significant influence on community composition. This influence was superimposed on a statistical relationship between the properties of stream catchments and microbial community composition. 4. The catchment regulates microbial communities in two different ways. It harbours the species pool from which the in‐stream microbial community is drawn and it governs stream chemistry and the composition of organic substrates that further shape the communities. We suggest that there is a random element to colonisation early in succession, whereas other factors such as species interactions, stream chemistry and organic substrate properties, result in a more deterministic regulation of communities during later stages.  相似文献

We re‐evaluate the characteristics of the little‐known Large‐billed Reed Warbler Acrocephalus orinus based on plumage and biometrical comparisons of 10 newly discovered specimens of A. orinus with a large sample of Blyth’s Reed Warbler Acrocephalus dumetorum, the species most closely resembling A. orinus. Using specimens whose identity was verified by DNA analyses, we found that the most important criteria for identifying orinus are its long and comparatively broad bill, with typically uniformly dark upper mandible, and on average longer tarsi and claws with a thin and pointed hind claw. In contrast, previously suggested differences in wing formula, plumage colour and shape of flight‐feathers are very minor, variable and seem of limited use for identification of orinus. Graphical analysis of hind claw length against bill to skull length should assist researchers in locating museum or live specimens of orinus that otherwise might be overlooked as dumetorum, and multivariate analysis unambiguously separates the two species based on our present dataset. A review of the scattered literature and specimen records suggests that the breeding distribution of orinus lies between southeastern Kazakhstan and northeastern Afghanistan, within the breeding range of dumetorum, but that orinus may well winter predominantly east of the main wintering range of dumetorum. Further evidence to support this assessment of the species' breeding range was obtained in June 2009, with the discovery of a population in the Pamir Mountains of Afghanistan.  相似文献

A field experiment with a 2 x2 factorial block design (WxSx)was conducted in northern Sweden where the mechanical loadsin the crowns of sixteen 2.5m high Scots pine (Pinus sylvestrisL.)trees were increased during one winter (W1, dormant period)and (or) summer (S1, growth period). Trees treated were loadedwith five 2kg bags hung over mid-crown branches close to thestem, i.e. 10kg per tree. After treatment, all trees were leftto grow untreated for one additional year. Trees were then cutat ground level and annual ring widths for the last 5 yearswere measured on stem discs taken at 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and50% of tree height. Differences between treatments were analysedwith two-way factorial ANOVA. Accumulated treatment responsewas positive for winter loading (W1Sx) at all levels, and statisticallysignificant at 1, 15 and 20% of tree height. Summer loading(WxS1) had positive effects at the lowest and middle parts ofthe stem, and negative in between. No statistically significanttwo-way interaction (W xS) was observed. Results support thehypothesis that Scots pine trees can retain information aboutmechanical forces acting on their stems during winter, and respondto this during the following growth period. The results alsosuggest that stem form of trees in boreal forests may be stronglyaffected by winter conditions.
